The seal is carved with the auspicious creature Qilin using the stone Yuewei Shoushanshi from the Shoushan Village of Fuzhou, Fujian Province. Shoushanshi has the longest history being used for seal carving and was excavated since the South Dynasty (AD 445). And among the over one hundred different varieties of Shoushanshi, Tianhuangshi is recognized as the best.

Qilin, also spelled as Kylin or Kirin (in Korean and Japanese), is a mythical hooved Chinese chimerical creature that is said to appear in conjunction with the arrival of a sage. It is a good omen that brings rui (roughly translated as "serenity" or "prosperity"). It is often depicted with what looks like fire all over its body.
